*the tent at boston fashion week 2012 ~ emily muller*

i didn’t want my last write up of the tent at boston fashion week to be over a week late, but it’s been a pretty nonstop weekend.  it’s nice to look back though i remember how beautiful & ethereal emily muller's latest collection was…appropriately titled “from the depths.”

as badass & hard hitting candice wu’s runway offerings were, emily muller’s designs showcased the complete opposite.  softly draping panels of diaphanous fabric in greens, greys & light blues were both fetchingly form-fitting & danced playfully in the breeze.  it sort of reminded me that if a mermaid took to land (like ariel), this would be her inspiration.  not obviously from the depths of the ocean, but hearkening to it.  the styling maintained the refreshingly feminine mood.  all models had massive braids piled high atop their heads…of the french & fishtail kind…some adorned with rosettes & bows…and some with multiple layers of sophie hughes chains.  i’m actually looking forward to trying to recreate some of the hairstyles myself.  again, as candice wu represented my ass-kicking ninja wannabe self…emily muller made me dream of my romantic, girly half.  if there were ever 2 boston tent designers who showcased this season that reflected both parts of my personality beautifully, i feel these talented women spoke directly to my fashionable heart!  no wonder they were my favorites!

*the tent at boston fashion week 2012 ~ candice wu couture*

i spent my entire sunday attending all of the last 4 shows at the tent at boston fashion week.  it was a *LOT* of fashion to mentally digest plus an insane amount of photos to edit.  i’ll start with the final show…CANDICE WU COUTURE…& work backwards from there as it is the most fresh on my mind & my absolute.favorite.by.far!

i’m not going to recap in the standard fashion journalist way (since i’m decidedly not a fashion journalist by any stretch of the imagination…merely a personal style blogger who knows what she likes).  if you’re looking for a proper & thorough description of the runway show, then read marissa’s recap.  instead, i will tell you a story…

once upon a time, there was a show called game of thrones.  in this show, there was a little princess named daenerys targaryen.  right now, she is homeless & without her throne.  she wanders the desert with her adopted subjects, the dothraki, in dusty ripped rags, but her lineage to royalty is unquestionable.  when her dragons grow up & she is able to take back the throne…candice wu’s couture pieces are the fine articles of clothing i imagine daenerys “stormborn” wearing as ruler of the seven kingdoms.

her royal wardrobe would consist of green dragon scales, buckled harnesses, spiked armbands, bejeweled gauntlets, cuffs & collars with studs of gold, whispers of rich silk worn with hard leather pieces befitting a warrior queen, *maybe* a headdress of feathers, but no question…a crown of dragons teeth…

*the tent at boston fashion week 2012 ~ sam mendoza*

i’ll be honest, i’m a girl who doesn’t dress *simply*…i like pattern mixing & complicated, fussy articles of clothing.  comfy chic & sexy are definitely not in my personal style manifesto.  so, first seeing sam mendoza's runway show, the first to kick off the tent at boston fashion week for 2012, you'd think i'd be uninterested.  flowy cut tank tops & full skirts came out & i thought “meh”…but then i took a closer look & started paying attention.

i started seeing details like orange trim around dress hemlines.  a pop of turquoise velvet enhancing necklines, beltlines & seams.  very sexy cutout backs to the deceptively simple & easy to wear evening gowns.  intricate origami-type pleating detail & draping to skirts. talk about more than meets the eye!

the simple silhouettes of the clothing made these tiny details stand out even more.  there weren’t even patterned fabrics at all, save for some minimal stripes on a crop top here & there.  some natural, organic jewelry of buddha bead bracelets & necklaces, plus braided hairstyles piled high on the head rounded out the styling.  to sum up, the clothing was flowy, light as air fabrics, cut simply & with minimal, yet impactful, details to enhance (instead of detract from) the female form.  i envision this girl easily wearing these luscious gowns out for a night on the town, then coming home & still able to luxuriously & comfortably host an after-party party into the wee hours of the morning.  simply sexy!

sam’s show was one of the first to sell out…rightfully so as he’s one of boston’s favorite local designers & you can’t beat the wearability of his clothing.  i was lucky to have gotten a waitlisted spot.  thank you very much to sam mendoza & congratulations on starting the tent at boston fashion week 2012 off on a strong & sultry note!
