i started my kung fu career back in 1992…ironically, with the boston university kung fu club & not wah lum, although that is most definitely my primary affiliation :)  i’ve been an off & on member through the decades, but more so an assistant instructor the past couple years & enjoy mentoring the up & coming kids.  last week, i was very moved when they asked the filipino students association there at BU if there was any way they could help the victims of typhoon haiyan/yolanda.  since the FSA was throwing a benefit show, they were glad for us to participate!  i tend not to take part in the club’s extracurricular activities, but being filipino & it was a last minute demonstration, so the BUKFC was short on program material, i volunteered to perform as well :)  so, here i am *on duty* in what i wear when i’m not in flouncy dresses & platform heels…hahaha!

back in action!  well, maybe more accurately *no longer* in action…hahaha!  this was a hectic past weekend for me as i attended one of the biggest kung tournaments on the east coast…the kuoshu international championships.  i no longer compete here, but came to cheer my kung fu brothers & sisters on.  i used to attend this tournament as a competitor years ago & it was actually nice that some people, like tournament coordinators remember me.  ahhhh…not too old yet, tee hee hee!  as always, got to see old friends & make brand new ones (like guys from brazil) ^_^  however, the BIGGEST news of this tournament weekend was that my kung fu instructor, my teacher of 17 years, was inducted into the kuoshu’s federation HALL OF FAME!  i’m so proud of him & his many accomplishments!  anywho, here’s a quick post to document what “fashion” looks like amongst the martial arts set - which as you can tell we sure do like our blacks, reds & yellows ^_^

*lei ann on duty (mostly) ~ southern edition*

early this month, i took a trip down south to knoxville, tennessee for a big kung fu school anniversary celebration.  here are the “non” outfit photos that ensued…hahaha!  on our way down, we met up with 11 (yes eleven!) friends for lunch in silver springs, maryland; met another friend, saw her show & had lunch in abingdon, virginia; went zipling & rafting; ate mass quantities of BBQ & drank a lot of koolaid & sweet tea & *finally* did my kung fu performance in my lovely new, never debuted turquoise uniform that i brought back from china 2 years ago ^_^

*lei ann…ON DUTY*

so, i can’t believe i’m posting this. welp…too late, already clicked submit…done & DONE. you see, i usually don’t like mixing up stuff. when i eat asian food, i seriously avoid having the meats/veggies/sauces leak onto my white rice. i like keeping the rice pristine. i don’t like my different groups of friends mingling together, like spa girls amongst martial artists…no one has anything in common to talk about. BUT…here i am posting one of my kung fu photos on my all fashiony, prissy, high-heeled personal style blog. WTH?

as cute & girly as i looked yesterday, today i am decidedly not girly (but still cute right? hahaha). one of my duties of my second career as kung fu instructor is performing…whether it be demonstrating martial arts techniques or chinese lion dancing for various events, exhibitions or festivals. today, we were hired by the hmart in burlington to perform lion dancing for the store’s anniversary. so for today, lei ann…off duty is officially “on duty” ^_^

OF NOTE…even in regulation kung fu garb, i’m still on trend, right? check it…i’m FINALLY wearing red pants!!!
