*black & blue*

as a kung fu instructor, i typically have bruises *somewhere* on my body at any given time…either from training with the students or admittedly self-inflicted with weapons work.  wearing black & blue today then would probably be a more *accurate* representation of my true personal style…bwahaha!

wearing: zac posen for target snaps dress || vintage brocade jacket via oona’s $5 bag sale || isabel toledo x payless mesh heels

on a final note about the past few days, those of us in boston have all been feeling a bit bruised.  the physical scars are evident for the bombing victims, but in some way or another, we all have the mental, psychological and emotional scars.  it still feels a bit frivolous to me to post my daily outfits & be happy about new shoes, but we also just have to get back to our normal routines, back to our regular way of life to see ourselves past these tragedies.  let the healing begin…

*dragons & brocade at the tent at boston fashion week*

wearing: navy satin dragon bomber jacket (via ebay) || express gold blouse (old) || custom made chinese brocade pleated skirt (in bangkok) || asos ankle bracelets || alviero martini duffel bag || hawaiian gold bracelets || n.y.l.a. mesh gold booties (similar)

oh hey look, an outfit post!  like from the other week though…hahaha!  this is what i wore to sam mendoza’s runway show at the tent during boston fashion week.  also on my birthday.  kinda feels like eons ago ^_^

*wedding in northern california*

so our portland trip with our friends was absolutely wonderful, but now on to the reason that we find ourselves on the west coast in the first place…the wedding of one of my best friends in the whole wide world and long-time kung fu brother! when i envisioned my outfit for his wedding, i didn’t think i was going to look *this* retro, espesh with the beehive & sunglasses, but hey, it all works :) i had wanted to wear this dress last summer to another wedding, but it turned out to be a sweltering 90+ degree day & with this heavy brocade fabric…it hadn’t seen the light of day…until now ^_^

in fact, quite the opposite for this wedding. it was too hot to wear for the one i intended & for this day, the weather was pretty darn cold in northern california. i thought the thicker brocade would keep me plenty warm enough. boy, was i wrong! glad i brought along my haori which with the gold threads woven in, was plenty dressy enough to go along with my outfit. otherwise, the only other outerwear option i had was my jean jacket. not good!

on a funny note, i had waited until the last minute to redo my nails. in a panic of not being able to decide which color i wanted, i did both! instead of doing the multiple colors on one hand, i did instead one color for each hand & to this day, no one has even noticed that they are different!

finally, it was an absolutely gorgeous ceremony…outdoor in the warm(ish) sunshine, set in a gazebo overlooking a spectacular rose garden. then, the dinner was 100% ukranian…all kinds of delicious smoked fish, pickled veggies, wrapped meat & seafood. it was like a 20-course meal! plus, the drinks…OH the drinks! when you go to a wedding & there are not only the wine glasses, but also full bottles of vodka & shot glasses on the table, you’re at a ukranian wedding all right! luckily, i’ve known my friend 15 years & he has trained me extensively, not just in kung fu, but in the ukranian ways as well…which includes vodka shooting! no asian glow for me! can’t say the same for *some* party goers…hahaha!

gong hay fat choy…year of the rabbit! i’m following all of the usual chinese traditions (even though i’m not chinese, but having done chinese kung fu for nearly 20 years now, i’m almost culturally chinese ^_^). so, didn’t wash my hair today (washes all your luck down the drain)…check! didn’t clean the house (same idea…don’t want to sweep out all your good luck)…check! not a difficult one to follow at all :) try to pay off all your debts (i did make the final payment on a major loan earlier this week)…check! didn’t spend money today (again, sets the tone for the new year)…check! ate noodles (for longevity)…check! finally, here’s a hard one that’s going to be very difficult for me.

don’t buy new shoes.

in cantonese, the word for “shoes” sounds like “rough” and you don’t want to have a “rough” new year, so have to hold off on purchasing new kicks :( luckily…i got these new chinese shoes earlier this week (anyone remember the black ones like these that we bought in junior/high school?) as it is allowed to buy new shoes & wear them *on* the new year. also threw on my MIL gift of snowmen red socks for extra, extra good luck. i’m a fan of pattern mixing, but this is getting ridiculous ^_^
